When to Take Your Child to the ENT

Children are prone to getting sick, and they don’t always know how to express what’s wrong. As such, it can be difficult to figure out when something may be more serious and require medical attention. As a parent, you must make these decisions for them, even though you can’t feel their symptoms. We share some signs that may mean it’s time to take your child to the ENT (Ears, Nose, and Throat) doctor to get checked out.

If Symptoms Persist

A subtle cough or sore throat may not call for a visit to the ENT. But when you notice that symptoms such as throat pain, snoring, nose bleeds, and ear infections continue for long periods, it could be something serious. You don’t want to overact, however, because it could just be allergies as well. If you’re unable to cure your child’s symptoms with over the counter medicine, it’s best to see a medical professional. Specialists, such as an ENT doctor, receive specific training, so they may have a greater chance of reaching a proper diagnosis compared to your pediatrician.

If an Infection Is Going Around School

The time of year could be another sign that it is time for an ENT visit. Sickness can spread rather quickly in schools depending on the season. For instance, colds are quite common in elementary school children. According to John Hopkins Medicine, kids can suffer, on average, six to eight colds a year. There are plenty of other dangerous illnesses, such as the Flu, that your child may obtain as well. Thankfully, schools often report this information to parents so they know if there is a bug going around. As such, during the cold and flu season, it’s important to check your email and ask your child if they received a notice to bring home. This is commonly how parents find out about a disease going around, and the report should include symptoms to look out for.
