AllergyAllergy Treatment

Ok, it may still be 75 and sunny here in Houston, but we can at least pretend to be getting in the holiday spirit, right? At Allergy & ENT Associates, we’re dreaming of hot cocoa, warm blankets and cozying up indoors—but for so many in our area, this time of the year also means dealing with indoor allergy triggers and symptoms. From dust mites to pet dander, allergens can become more problematic as we find ourselves spending more time indoors. Here are simple, effective ways to reduce indoor allergens and breathe easier this winter.

1. Keep Dust Mites in Check

Dust mites thrive in warm, humid environments, making your bedding and upholstered furniture prime real estate. To combat these microscopic pests:

  • Wash sheets, pillowcases and blankets weekly in hot water.
  • Use allergen-proof covers on mattresses and pillows.
  • Vacuum carpets and rugs frequently with a vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter.

2. Manage Mold Growth

Mold can hide in damp areas like bathrooms, basements or even holiday decorations stored in musty places. To keep mold at bay:

  • Use a dehumidifier to maintain indoor humidity levels below 50%.
  • Clean and dry areas prone to moisture, such as shower curtains, under sinks and window sills.
  • Inspect and clean stored items, like decorations, before bringing them inside.

3. Reduce Pet Dander

Winter often means more time spent indoors with furry friends, leading to a buildup of pet dander. Here’s how to manage it:

  • Bathe and groom pets regularly to reduce shedding and dander.
  • Create pet-free zones, especially in bedrooms.
  • Invest in an air purifier designed to filter pet allergens.

4. Improve Air Quality

With windows closed for warmth, indoor air can quickly become stale and filled with allergens. To freshen things up:

  • Open windows briefly on milder days to ventilate your home.
  • Replace HVAC filters regularly and consider using HEPA filters.
  • Avoid burning scented candles or using aerosol sprays, as they can aggravate symptoms.

5. Declutter and Deep Clean

Dust and allergens can accumulate in cluttered spaces and hard-to-reach spots. To keep your home allergen-free:

  • Declutter surfaces to reduce areas where dust can settle.
  • Dust with microfiber cloths that trap particles rather than spreading them.
  • Steam clean or deep clean carpets, rugs and upholstery.

6. Monitor Humidity Levels

Dry winter air can irritate nasal passages, while overly humid air encourages mold and dust mites. Strike the right balance by:

  • Using a humidifier to add moisture to dry air, but keep it below 50% humidity.
  • Cleaning humidifiers regularly to prevent mold growth.
