How to Treat Nasal Congestion and Sinus Pressure

With allergy season approaching, you might be suffering from nasal congestion and sinus pressure. Instead of dreading the spring, taking some simple steps can let you enjoy it. Learn how to treat nasal congestion and sinus pressure below.

Drink Fluids

Drinking plenty of fluids can help many things, including nasal congestion and sinus pressure relief. By sticking with fluids like water, you can help drain any mucus that might be causing that congestion or sinus pressure. While drinking fluids can help, you’ll want to avoid caffeinated drinks and alcoholic beverages.

Take Care of Your Nose

An obvious piece of advice is to take care of your nose. However, many people don’t. To take care of your nose, gently wash your nose one nostril at a time. Harvard Health Publishing also recommends washing your nostrils every day to moisten the membranes and get rid of any extra mucus.

Use A Humidifier

Another method is to use a humidifier because it will add moisture to the air. The best place to set up a humidifier is in your bedroom—all you have to do is fill it with water and add some salt to get it going. Consider getting an air purifier for your home as well.

Elevate Your Head While Sleeping

A common mistake made by people who suffer from nasal congestion and sinus pressure is sleeping face-down or to the side. Instead, try to sleep with your head propped up. This lets your sinuses drain and alleviates congestion.

Eat Spicy Food

A final way to treat nasal congestion and sinus pressure is to eat spicy food. According to UCLA Health, spicy foods like the cayenne pepper are rich in capsaicin, which thins out the mucus in your system and decreases congestion.

While all of these methods can be very helpful for you, the best treatment is to still see an ENT Allergist near you.
